Support BREAKING GROUND

by sending Holly to Cameroon

Hi Everyone!

I have saved up all my vacation time from 2010 to spend three weeks in Ngaoundéré, Cameroon volunteering for Breaking Ground. During my trip (November 20th - December 13th), I will be monitoring and building capacity for Breaking Ground\'s  Women\'s Entrepreneurial Program (link). This program has been in existence since 2007 and has given grants to 22 women to start or expand their own businesses in order to raise themselves and their families out of poverty.

Meet 2010 grant recipient, Ndounouga
Ndounouga is a Gbaya woman from the town of Meiganga, southeast of Ngaoundéré. She is the widowed mother of four children and a grandmother of one child as well. In addition to caring for her children and grandchild, she takes care of her elderly mother. She does not have a stable source of income and believes that by selling smoked fish, she will be able to improve the quality of life of her family. With her grant from Breaking Ground, Ndounouga will purchase her first large order of smoked fish and pay for its shipment to Ngaoundéré.

During my trip, I will be visiting women, such as Ndounouga, checking in on their projects, and seeing what can be done to improve and expand the program.  Breaking Ground needs additional funds to fully support it\'s next round of grant recipients for 2011. It takes $445-1100 to fund a grant to a woman entrepreneur. Please DONATE to my fund to support this great work. It has been proven, that income earned by a woman is more likely to go to family needs, like food and education, than income earned by a man. This is a small amount of money considering the impact it will have on women like Ndounouga and their families.

I hope the combined generosity of my friends and family will enable at least one woman and her family to achieve their dreams. Half your donation will be a tax-deductible contribution to Breaking Ground to support these women. The other half of your donation will cover the cost of my plane ticket to monitor the program. Any additional money raised beyond $3000 will be contributed directly to Breaking Ground.

While in Ngaoundéré I will be staying with the same family who hosted me during my study abroad in 2007 and spending time with my adored great-grandmother Dadi who is in the picture above. Despite the fact that Dadi and I do not speak a common language, we have a very close relationship. This month Dadi will be celebrating her 96th birthday and she is very excited that I will be returning soon to share those celebrations with her. If you could DONATE $1.00 in honor of each year of Dadi\'s life, your total contribution would be $96.00.

Of course, whatever you can give will be deeply appreciated. You may GIVE TODAY by filling out the link to the Pay Pal form below.

Your donation will:
-
support Breaking Ground\'s work to help Cameroonian women & their families get out of poverty
-give Dadi a wonderful 96th birthday gift from her honorary grand-daughter, Holly (aka Halimatou Sadia)

Whether you donate or not, I would love for you to follow what I am doing. Starting on November 20th, I will be posting updates with pictures and stories from the women I will visit. I will do my best to post on this site as well as facebook.

I appreciate your support. Stay tuned, this should be an exciting journey!

Thank you,
Holly
