Kristin's Brain Surgery

A moment can literally change your life.

We have all walked on a slippery driveway. We have all taken an unfortunate tumble. Most of us have had to sit while on hold with our health insurance trying to understand coverage or advocate for treatment.  For a lot of us, these events have been minor hiccups.

After falling on ice on her driveway, Kristin sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Two years later, she still has severe and chronic pain, cognitive function challenges, and significant visual impairment.  Kristin has seen 31 different doctors, specialists, and rehabilitation therapists over the past 25 months.  She continues to average 3 medical appointments a week.  Every day is a challenge for Kristin just to function and care for her family.

Imagine having the worst migraine of your life every single day- with no end in sight. Imagine trying to make serious decisions through the fog of a TBI. Imagine trying to work on a computer when your eyes won’t cooperate and light is painful. Imagine every interaction, with every human being, under every circumstance, as profoundly painful and exhausting.  Imagine being isolated and alone in your home most days, unable to drive, tolerate light, noise, and stimulus.  Imagine missing out on all of your child’s soccer games, piano recitals, school events, award ceremonies, reading to your child at night, going to the park, going out for a pizza, and any of the other simple family events that make a life.  Finally, imagine a 9 year old girl, who just wants her mom back to normal and who can’t possibly understand what has happened.

In order to financially contribute, keep her health insurance, and maintain some semblance of self, Kristin has continued to work at her job through these past two years. Kristin is lucky in that she has a supportive group of colleagues and company who have provided flexibility and support.  However, this remains an enormous challenge for someone with her type of injury.

Kristin has researched her condition thoroughly. She invests tremendous amounts of time and energy in working to heal. She has shown remarkable strength, unbelievable pain tolerance, resilience, and she has applied herself to every prescribed treatment modality, no matter how painful or costly to try and be the wife and mother she desperately wants to be, and remembers being.

New research shows two procedures may give her relief from her daily, crippling migraines. These procedures are incredible expensive, and her insurance has not authorized or approved either of the procedures, making them too costly for Kristin’s family to pursue.

As friends, we are left thinking, “What can we do?”  We can’t heal her brain.  But, we have an opportunity to help in a way that truly matters.  Small contributions added together will help her get closer to having one of these procedures, pay looming bills, and lessen the pressure on her family.

Collectively, we can help this family through a challenge too big to face alone. Let’s work together to give Kristin a chance at healing. Her nine-year old daughter, her husband, and Kristin need our help.

Please contribute to this cause.  Any amount is useful, even seemingly tiny amounts add up to big change. The need is urgent.
