My name is Kristine Acosta but I was Janet Doe in a recently closed court case. I do not share this for any reason other than to start this story with the situation that changed my life. I am a survivor of child sexual abuse, which has taken me a long time to come to terms with and a long time to admit to anyone. In the U.S, 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys is a victim of child sexual abuse. A horrible statistic that looms over families in America.
In India, 1 in 2 children is a victim of sexual abuse. On September 2nd I will be going to Jodhpur, India to volunteer with Sambhali Trust . Sambhali Trust is aiming to lessen the statistic in their country through their "No Bad Touch" campaign which is educating girls on child sexual abuse. Abusers have admitted that it is much harder to abuse children who understand what abuse is and how it happens. Talking and teaching children about body parts and bad touching is the first step in prevention and is something that needs to be continuously refreshed in their minds. In addition to the "No Bad Touch" campaign they also provide underprivileged women and girls with an education in English, Hindi, math, vocational and social skills. Teaching them these skills helps these women in developing confidence, self-esteem, and financial independence to keep them from being forced to marry on or before their 18th birthdays.
I am raising money to help with the funds for the the trip as well as to be able to give back to the program while I am there. (i.e provide the girls with school supplies, clothing, food etc.) Every single dollar, positive thought and prayer is appreciated as I embark on this month long journey.
