Hi everyone!
This past month has been a whirlwind for our family. This November, Kristian was diagnosed with cancer – specifically, Stage 2 B Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (non-bulky). Thankfully it seems to have been caught reasonably early, and that this form of cancer is considered treatable.

After months of feeling sick, Kristian went to the doctor thinking he might have pneumonia or a number of other germs from the preschool he is teaching at. Being new to Colorado, Kristian found a new doctor who turned out to be a lifesaver.

Once other possibilities were ruled out, she was adamant that he get a CT scan which revealed several enlarged lymph nodes. Kristian was immediately scheduled for neck surgery to remove a lymph node above his collar bone. The biopsy led to the diagnosis of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma a couple days later. From there, he was scheduled for a PET scan, which would show any other cancerous tissue in his body, as well as how advanced the disease had progressed. Once this was completed, he had his first oncology appointment to discuss results and treatment.

Over the summer, Kristian began teaching at a preschool in Boulder. Due to the chemotherapy, he will be unable to work during this time. He is going to miss seeing those kiddos everyday, but is looking forward to getting back in the classroom soon! For now, all activities on the field, court, slopes and trails will unfortunately be put on hold as well.

This news has been scary and shocking, but we’re blessed to be surrounded by an amazing group of people. The dinners, baked goods, calls, texts and more have all been gratefully appreciated.  It’s been encouraging to hear that this treatment plan is effective against Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. As with any bump in the road, these next couple months will have its’ ups and downs in adjusting to learn to live with this diagnosis, but Kristian’s optimistic and fun-loving mentality is ready to beat this! As much as we’ve learned so far, there will be much more information on the horizon as it becomes available throughout treatment. We will try to continue to post updates here as frequently as we can!
