Kristen's Fencing Fundraiser

Hello! My name is Kristen Palmer, I am 16 years old, and I am a saber fencer from Brooklyn, New York. I am a junior at Poly Prep Country Day School and the co-captain of my school’s fencing team. Competitively, I fence for the Peter Westbrook Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that teaches inner-city kids how to fence and empowers participants with essential life skills.  As one of a growing number of black females on the fencing scene, I hope to help show the fencing community what we can do. I have set high goals for myself and hope to participate in the Olympics someday!

I started fencing competitively about four years ago and recently fenced in my first international tournament, which took place in Eislingen, Germany. It was a great experience and has sparked my desire to participate on the international circuit more often. I am continuing to work hard to qualify for events like this and I will be heading to Mödling, Austria in January 2018 for a Cadet (Under 17) event.

However, fencing is a very expensive sport. It requires you to buy your own equipment and pay for entry into competitions. National and international tournaments also require you to pay for airfare and hotel accommodations. For the 2017 – 2018 fencing season, my goal is to compete in six National events, two to three International tournaments, and regional/local events. It is important to participate and do well in tournaments this year since college coaches scout for new fencers at these events.

I am seeking your help.  Due to medical illness and job loss during 2011 to 2016, my parents incurred a lot of financial debt which they are currently paying off.   They can only budget for local and regional fencing competitions in the New York, New Jersey and Boston areas.  My GoFundMe was created to offset the fencing expenses for my participation in National and International competitions.  These competitions are important so that I can continue to advance my fencing skills, gain exposure/experience on the National and International level and qualify for additional events (including my dream of representing the United States at the Olympic Games) .

Your voluntary donation will go towards: registration/competition fees ($70 to $400 per tournament); international competitive gear and fencing licenses (over $1,000); air travel for National and International events (ranging between $300 to $1,000 per tournament), hotel fees ($60 to $160 per day), coaching fees and food. Airline miles and/or hotel rewards donations are also welcome!

Please join me on my fencing journey and together we can see where the sport takes me. Whether you can or cannot donate at this time, I ask that you keep me in your prayers. Thank you.

 Allez (Go)!
