A year and a half ago, Kris Chochrek, a physician recruiter with All Star Recruiting , scheduled what she thought would be a routine eye exam. Since her eyes had been bothering her, she assumed she needed new glasses. But during her appointment, instead of picking out stylish new frames, Kris was referred to a specialist. And in just a few days’ time, she found herself visiting an optical specialist, then a neuro-ophthalmologist, and getting an MRI scan. The diagnosis: Pseudotumor cerebri (PTC).
A neurological condition, PTC causes intracranial pressure and mimics the signs of a brain tumor. Its symptoms can cause swelling of the optic nerve, and the disorder can result in vision loss. Other symptoms include headaches made worse by eye movement; neck, shoulder, and/or back pain; ringing in the ears, pulsing in time with your heartbeat; nausea; vomiting; dizziness; blurred or dimmed vision; difficulty with peripheral vision; double vision; seeing flashes of light; and episodes of blindness.
Since her diagnosis, to preserve her sight and alleviate some of her symptoms, Kris has had a litany of tests, two brain surgeries, and one eye surgery. She has exhausted her benefits and insurance will not pay for further procedures. To save her eyesight, she needs three additional surgeries. Her out-of-pocket expenses will be roughly $30,000.
Throughout her physical, emotional, and financial challenges, Kris has maintained a positive demeanor. She is a dedicated, well-liked, and valued All Star Recruiting teammate, and her indomitable yet kind-hearted spirit inspire everyone who knows her.
