Our names are Don and Melkia Hopkins
The first blessing in our lives is our daughter Makayla. She’s 3 years old and on Friday, November 20, 2015, our lives were turned upside down. We learned that our baby girl, who dances her way through everyone’s heart, had high blood pressure. It was so high the doctor was worried and scheduled her for an ultrasound. On Monday, November 23, we received a call to get her to John Hopkins emergency room immediately and they would be waiting for us. The ultrasound revealed there was a large mass on her left kidney. On Tuesday, November 24, Makayla was in surgery for 6 hours where they removed the mass and her left kidney. She was diagnosed with Wilms’ Tumor (a rare kidney cancer that primarily affects children). My 3-year old baby was diagnosed with stage 2 cancer. Our hearts sank like a ton of bricks and we are trying to be brave for her. Mommy can’t stop crying. Makayla has already begun a long journey of 18 weeks of chemotherapy. Please send up your prayers for our baby.
Also, some of my co-workers donated a little leave to me and this was another blessing. But Don’s job doesn’t operate like mine. We understand that our insurance will cover most of Makayla’s surgery, but we don’t know how much yet. However, it will not pay for all of her medicine. Additionally, now when we miss work we will not be paid. And it will cause us to fall behind in our bills. If we are missing work we are going to have trouble paying for her medicine, keeping the medical insurance up, and paying our rent and other bills. I will be out of work for several months because I need to be with my baby girl. Don will come to appointments when necessary. We are both missing days from work. This is our only child. We cannot let her go through this without one of us being there.
This is hard to do, but we are asking as humbly as we know how for financial support. This is our only child and right now we can’t breathe until we know she is going to be better. Whatever you can do will be greatly appreciated. Trust me, we wouldn’t ask if there was not a need. Please help us if you can. May God grant mercy to my child and bless all of you. Thanks.
