Bring Fred Home

Donation protected
On the 29th May 2020, our beloved Freda suffered a massive stroke after an operation to remove a small tumour from her lung. Freda was admitted to St James’ s hospital after being rushed to Beaumont hospital for emergency surgery to remove the clot from her brain. Unfortunately the risks of this surgery were life threatening and it was decided not to carry out the surgery.

In ICU in St James’s Freda was placed on a ventilator. Over the next few days the swelling on Freda’s brain deteriorated and we were called upon to say our goodbyes. We were told there was absolutely no hope for any kind of meaningful recovery. The plan for the following day was to commence end of life comfort measures.

The next day Freda surprised us all. She regained consciousness and was clutching a photograph of her first grandchild, Faith. I knew then she wasn’t ready to leave us yet.

Freda spent the next 8 weeks in ICU and High Dependancy. Once stable enough she was transferred to a stroke rehabilitation ward in St James’s. This didn’t come without its own challenges.

Freda experienced a lot of medical issues and from the first 8 weeks in rehab we saw very minimal improvement. The wonderful team of doctors listened to us intently and brought Freda back to life. We began to see improvement everyday.

As Freda’s stroke happened in May of this year, Covid 19 has seriously impacted her recovery. Her family is her life and restricted visiting has proven incredibly difficult. As her expressive communication is severly impaired, one family member is permitted to attend one rehab session a week to provide encouragement and support for Freda. This has been invaluable for both Freda and us as a family. Freda has not seen her son Stuart or her daughter Siobhan since May.

It has been suggested to us from the very beginning that long term care was the best option for Freda. This did not sit right with us as Freda is the centre of our entire family and we decided that we would do everything we possibly could to bring her home where she belongs. To reunite her with her family where she can continue to make progress in her recovery surrounded by her family.

The rehabilitation team are very pleased with Freda’s progress, she continues to make gains and has surprised us all with reaching goals. They have given us the green light to start planning her return home.

This is where we need your help!!!!

We hope to have Freda home by January, but in order to do this we need to carry out extensive modifications to Freda’s home. We need to build a wheelchair accessible entrance to the house, widen doorways and modified bedroom and bathroom facilities.

Any funds raised will be sent directly to Freda’s husband Terry to allow for works to commence. We would appreciate any help you can offer with no donation too small.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
