North Korean Orphanage in China

Every day, across a heavily guarded border, North Koreans are escaping their impoverished country to mainland China, hoping to avoid persecution and starvation. The majority of this population is women, who generally find easier means of settlement through small labor tasks and/or marriage to Chinese locals. It is startling to note, however, that 80-90% of them have been forced into these marriages or even human trafficking. China refuses to grant refugee status to North Korean defectors and considers them illegal economic migrants. As a result, the Chinese authorities arrest and deport hundreds of defectors back to North Korea in mass.
The KPAM foundation (an NGO group based in San Jose, CA) established an orphanage in the M region (not specified for security purposes) of China in 2011 to take care for children left behind by deported North Korean mothers. Our orphanage operates as a home-stay and there are currently seven children of North Korean defectors living with a pastor’s family of four. The orphans' fathers are mostly incapable of taking care of their children because they are physically or mentally disabled, while other relatives are disinterested in tending to these children's need. The pastor’s family lovingly cares for the children, in the hope that one day they will come to understand the Father’s love. KPAM wholly supports the family financially and emotionally.
Yearly rent for the three-bedroom apartment they share is approximately $5000. The monthly living cost for this family of 11 is approximately $1500, including food, basic necessities, tutoring fees, and school tuition/lunch fees. This does not include incidental costs, such as repair of appliances, warm clothes for the harsh winters (which can reach as low as -20F), and occasional expenses related to the children’s education.
Our NGO is run entirely by volunteers and recently, we have been struggling financially, as the number of private donors have declined. However, we cannot shut down the orphanage. We are responsible for the lives of these children and there are even more children on waitlist that desperately need our help.

Since our overhead is run entirely by volunteers, 100% of the funds (minus the bank transfer fees of course) go directly to the orphanage we support. All donations to the KPAM foundation are tax deductible.
