COVID19 relief packages for families in Tanzania

From all of us - Thank you for visiting our fundraising page! The community of Nkoaranga, just outside of Arusha, holds a special place in all of our hearts. The 4 of us have lived, worked and made a second home there for many years - and each of us will tell you that it is the most caring, kind and resilient community that we have ever come across. Through our friends at the local hospital, we have learned that many community members are in need of relief packages during this chaotic time. Many have lost work since tourism is a major source of employment in the area and there are few social support programs available. In addition, there is a lack of education about how to prevent the spread of covid.

In partnership with Nkoaranga (Nn-kwa-rahn-ga) Hospital and Afrileo designs (owned and operated by Tanzanian entrepreneur, Leo - pictured above) - the following relief package for families has been designed. The package focuses on the immediate needs of the family and preventative care. The relief packages and preventative care education will be delivered by the Nkoaranga Hospital palliative care team. Preventative care education is imperative in slowing the spread and protecting the community. With materials specifically designed for the East African way of life coupled with the relief package, the palliative care team is able to educate the community and provide them with the supplies necessary to implement the preventative care suggestions.

1. Maize              20 kg                - $10
2. Beans               4.5kg              -$5
3. Liquid soap for handwashing -$3
4. bars of soap for general hygiene       - $3
5. Cooking oil 1 lt    -$3
6. Bucket for water/hand washing          -$8
7. 2 masks per family member, 344 masks total: $430/44 families = rounded up to $10/family

total per family $42x44=$1,848

Currently, there are a total of 44 families that urgently need support. We expect this number to grow significantly over time and have set our initial goal of $1,848 to support only the first 44 families.   These families were evaluated and chosen by the Nkoaranga Hospital palliative care team as each are already receiving at home medical care due to at least one family member being chronically ill. Those with chronic medical conditions are at higher risk for contracting a severe case of covid. For that reason it was decided that these families need the covid relief package urgently.
