Kovu's Journey

My name is Cynthia King and on the morning of May 25th around 3 am I woke up to find my Seizure Alert Dog Kovu unable to breathe his tongue was hanging out of his mouth on the left side, his heart was beating so fast that I could feel it through his chest.
I never left his side even when we reached Shores Veterinary Care Unit. That night instead of comforting me, I was the one comforting Kovu praying that I would not loss ' My Best Friend In The Whole World.'
We arrived at the Emergency Care Unit at 4:00 a.m. that morning with Kovu, after signing in the Veterinary technician came out giving Kovu three cc's of Morphine to him calm down. Because his breathing had become labored, and his heart rate was fast, and he also had a temperature of 105 degrees.
Putting him a gurney they took Kovu back once he was stable enough to move for the doctor to examine him.
Due to the dire circumstances of the situation, I had to borrow money from my mother for the $ 800.00 deposit - so that they would care for Kovu. When the nurse came over with the paperwork for me to fill out, they asked me the question that none of us wants to hear regarding a loved one.
Which was if Kovu went into Cardiac arrest if I wanted them to revive him? Crying as I was trying to fill out the paperwork, my answer was No that I wanted to let him go peacefully.
That night they did blood work, X-rays and other tests after stabilizing Kovu's temperature of 105 degrees. Kovu had developed an unusual inflammation of the skeletal system, labored breathing, rapid heartbeat, and severe pain in his stomach. Finally, the Veterinarian told us that Kovu had become stabilized for the moment, and if anything change, they would call me. The next couple of hours were terrible till the Veterinarian called me with some good news.
Kovu was out of the woods resting comfortably; they were giving him plenty of medicine and liquids through an IV in his paw. On Saturday afternoon, I was allowed to visit with Kovu in one of the rooms along with my mother and my boyfriend Ken for a few minutes.
When the nurse came for him, all of the arrangements had been taken care of so that Kovu would stay with them until Monday the 27th of May at 7:00 pm, which was Memorial Day. My mother gladly loaned me $ 1276.00 to pay for the bill so they would keep Kovu where he needed to be for the time being.
That night when we picked Kovu up the doctor told us that Kovu could be suffering from a couple of different things, but for now, he was out of danger and could come home. Laryngeal paralysis is a condition that severely affects a pet’s breathing. But in pets (especially dogs), when laryngeal paralysis occurs, taking a deep breath becomes impossible, and the pet suffocates. The second diagnosis was a possible Heart Murmur; the third was Canine Polyneuropathy in Dogs, which is a neurological disease. The last one is the possibility of Arthritis that effect Kovu as he got older.

Every one of these conditions is treatable through medication, with the proper care, diet, exercise, and surgery if it is necessary when the time comes. The funds raised through GoFundMe would be used to pay for all of Kovu's Medical Expenses. So he can get better and live a healthy life again.
Kovu came to me one cold night on December 16th of 2011 at eight weeks old to become my Seizure Alert Dog, that I would train myself with the help of a certified dog trainer. From Noelle's Dogs Four Hope from Denver, Colorado to where I live in Middletown, Pa.- Kovu was the best Christmas gift I have ever received. I love Kovu very much- he is more than just a Seizure Alert Dog, but my best friend, companion, he is also a part of me, and I love him very much.
Right now he is sleeping on his bed beside my chair with his favorite toy a stuffed Llama he got for Christmas and is snoring.
Kovu is on six different types of medication right now; tomorrow our own Veterinarian will be seeing Kovu at 10; 00 am at his office to give him a more thorough examination, bloodwork, and more tests until the final diagnosis is made.
Then Kovu's Journey Begins until he's well again!
