Kaylie Kovach is a player within our club on 15 Rox. On Saturday, Kaylie's dad, Nathan, started not feeling well while the family was driving to Minnesota for USAV Girls Junior Nationals. The feeling peristed through the weekend and then on Monday, while Kaylie was playing at the tournament, Nathan said his symptoms had progressed to feeling like he was having a heart attack.
He was rushed to an emergency room to be checked. They ran several tests, including a catscan, that showed he had an aortic dissection that would require emergency surgery. Within 3 hours of arrival he was tested, transferred to another hospital and immediately placed in an operating room to have his chest opened to remove the damaged portion of his aorta and receive a synthetic replacement. The doctors said it was so good they went in when they did because the condition is often fatal.
Surgery went well, however, Nathan has been kept sedated in the ICU to allow his oxygen levels to restore to normal. The road to recovery after a surgery of this magnitude is very daunting.
Because of the nature of the surgery, the recovery time for him to get to a point that he can safely travel home is a minimum of 3 weeks and as long as 6 weeks. With this being the case, we ask all of the AVA of Texas family for their help. The Kovach family will be required to stay in Minneapolis until Nathan is safely fit to travel, a price that will add up quickly.
