Friday, July 30th, after eating lunch, Mike felt ill and went outside the restaurant. Soon after, he came back in and told me to call 911 for him. He laid on a bench and began vomiting and we thought he had food poisoning. When the ambulance arrived, it shook me and our girls to watch, helplessly, as their dad taken away by ambulance. We were told he has a serious infection in his pancreas. It was, and continues to be, very hard to watch. We are not exactly sure what caused this severe acute pancreatitis episode but, we do know it is very serious. Each day there are hurdles and things that go right and things that go wrong. The biggest concern through all of this is the possibility of sepsis. Sepsis is an infection in the blood caused from the pancreatitis and it will shut down the other organs and, if not caught in time, it will shut them all down. This is very scary! This could actually kill him!
On Saturday, at 5:30 am, I get a call that they are moving him to ICU because his BP is dropping too much and they need to monitor him. At this time, I was advised by his doctors and care team to remain by his side. I was able to find a sitter, called into work, and went to be with him. He was still in severe pain even with the pain medication. The prognosis was not good. His BP was not stable, White Blood cell count was extremely high, heart rate very high-around 165- and a severe fever from the infection. They put him on more meds and antibiotics and worked on getting him stable. They needed his blood pressure stable to administer more IV fluids to try and flush the infection and toxins out. That night, the doctor told me that there is a severe chance of sepsis coming in and the lungs and kidneys shutting down. By Sunday, the beginnings of sepsis were creeping in. They put him on a breathing tube and said the might be starting kidney dialysis to get rid of the toxins. They also wanted to do a plasma transfusion. This hospital is very skilled with this type of treatment and I am beyone thankful he is there! They did not start kidney dialysis because his bp was too ubpredictable, even with meds. By Monday, he was still running a fever and heart rate was still high. He was able to squeeze my hand and open eyes for communication. We really miss him and need him home!!! This is so tough. The girls and I have been surrounded by wonderful people and that is a true blessing in our time of need. It has been challenging to juggle hospital, home, four girls and missing out on so much work. To add to all of this, our landlord called and informed me they are selling our home! Now, I am confronted with having to find a new home to rent, packing AND moving in the middle of this nightmare. I have been told that he will be in the hospital at least 3-4 more weeks, at a minimum, and now they say there is a new infection and the chance of abscess or pseudocysts from the infection is a high probability and that may require surgery.
