Support free learning!

Hi, I am a PhD student carrying out research using stem cells to help improve the lifestyles of children born with genetic deaf-blindness. I have chosen to live within walking distance of the Great Ormond St Hospital so that I would have the advantage of spending more time on research, including early mornings and lates nights, and less time travelling. This means, I am rather tight on finances.

I am learning electronics, sewing, and programming to create my own unique wearable fashion technology pieces. I would like to teach others the easy tricks that I have learned to make their own pieces too.

My workshops that introduces my role in medical research and teaches children to hack electronics and hardware has generated a high interest in girls to pursue STEM.

AIM: I have started conducting my own workshops to teach children & adults how to create their own fun electronic wearable. The workshops are completely FREE and to maintain that, I am asking for some financial support.

The reason this platform was chosen to raise the finances is to avoid the financial pressure that may arise if donations were requested during the workshops.

These are some of the craft materials that I have used on the 18th of Nov 2017 for a wearables workshop at the Covent Garden Raspberry Jam. In this workshop, I provided craft materials as well as sewable electronics such as battery holders, LEDs, and conductive thread to create light up rossettes. I also took the time to create booklets that participants can take home to create their own wearable tech!

I have sourced for the most value for money materials and it has come up to a total of at least £30. I am happy to provide a description of materials and the shops purchased from. Please request if you'd like to purchase any of these items for your own use!

I hope to provide updates on events where this funding is used. I may not be as efficient in updating due to my busy work schedule but if you follow me on twitter.com/konichiwakitty, you will surely be update with my current workshops and makes!

Any additional funds raised will also help me to continue conducting workshops, hacking electronics, and travelling for exhibitions.
I travel to give talks and exhibit whenever I can. At these exhibitions, I showcase my collection of wearable fashion technology to encourage girls of all ages to try tinkering with electronics and programming. A lot of young girls have the perception that Fashion, Technology and Engineering don't mix and that they would have to give up either field to pursue the other. I make it clear to these girls that this is not true, and that you can be super nerdy and also still love fashion, beauty and make up. Interdisciplinary studies are highly encouraged and are the future. I also set myself as a role model to show that you can be a scientist in stem cell research but also create with electronics, technology and crafts. Pursuing one field of interest doesn't mean you can't have any other interests!

Future plans include creating a Patreon page so that everyone will be able to follow me on this journey and learn together!

Please support me in any way that you can, if everyone left £1, i would only require 55 followers to achieve my goal! Otherwise, please support by sharing and spreading the word. Thank you!
