Kona's Recovery

Our 5 year old rescue Kona had an unexpected surgery on Fri 10/13. After the loss of the second dog my wife and I had raised and loved during our 25 year marriage, we had determined that with the kids grown, we would now focus our time and effort on our grandchildren and a few more years in the workplace before retirement. Then came the day 4 1/2 years ago when a van pulled up while I was doing the yards and asked if I would take a puppy. My first impulse was to say “thank you, but no” and then I saw the black haired, black eyed face on a lab mix and I called my wife out into the yard. That puppy took me back to our other dogs, Faith and Shadow, who were that same solid black pup. My wife had the look that told me this was not happening until she saw that puppy with an uncertain future. Kona found a stable home with us that day. She has become part of our family.

This past week, Kona’s mobility seemed off. Early Friday morning we woke up to a horrendous sound. As my wife said, if a dog can scream, it was Kona screaming. It was heartbreaking. Her hind legs and tail were immobilized. A long day had begun. From X-rays at the vet to another car ride to a neuro specialist where the MRI revealed 3 displaced/herniated discs C5-C7. The good news was that surgery was indicated and could be done immediately in order to give Kona a chance of avoiding permanent paralysis. The tough part was hearing the odds of success would be 50% and a long period of confinement and rehab would be necessary before we would know the result. Another tough thing to hear was the cost.
