Hi there! My name is Koby.
I am a Line Cook and Educator in New York City, and I'm transgender!
I came out as transgender almost 2 years ago, but this is something that has always been apart of my life. I experience persistent gender dysphoria (meaning my sense of self does not match my biological body). After coming out, I felt confident enough to begin my physical transition. I have been taking hormones for a year and a half, and work with an amazing team of health care workers, advocates, and peers in NYC.
In 2018, I was able to meet with a surgeon about top surgery and begin the next step of my transition. I was assigned female at birth, and having gone through female puberty, developed breast tissue. Top surgery is a procedure that is carried out to create a male-contoured chest.
If you live in the United States, it's more than likely that you think our health care system is frustrating to navigate. For trans folks, its at least ten times harder, I swear. It has been almost a year of persistent pursuit (doctor appointments, classes, therapy, insurance submissions, letters, and arguably most frustrating, waiting and being patient) to have access to this surgery. Something that will change my life in an indescribable way.
Drum ROLLLLLLL! This past week I received a date for surgery!
I am making a go fund me because I have to put it all out there, and take a risk! This surgery is expensive. It will cost over 10,000 plus the cost of post-care. I will be unable to work for close to 6 weeks, and as an hourly employee, this means no pay check. To say the least, I am feeling a bit stressed regarding the financial cost of it all.
I am hoping to fundraise money to help pay for the cost of my surgery.
I am asking for help. If you know me, this is something I am generally not so great at. But like I said, I'm going for it. What is there to lose.
There have been times in my life that I would not have made it through without the help of other people. People who have helped me realize that who I am is okay, that I am worth it, and that I am valued. I feel so lucky.
If you feel it in your heart to give a donation, I would be elated. I wouldn't know how to thank you, how to pay you back. I would be eternally grateful. You would be helping me lessen what feels like an enormous burden amid a very exciting time.
