Ko Uchiyama

Our dear Ko Uchiyama suffered a cardiac arrest on August 4th, 2018 around 1am in the morning. He was rushed into the ICU, where doctors discovered not only had his heart failed, but his organs severely damaged because his heart was no longer pushing blood. Ko was put on both an ecmo and impella machines to provide him with prolonged cardiac and respiratory support, and has been on sedation medication.

On August 7th, doctors at the UWMC attempted a biopsy which subsequently failed and left a clot forming in the back of his heart. They had to re-open his chest to perform further surgeries.

As of August 16th, Ko’s heart is slowly recovering and the doctors have removed the ecmo machine. But unfortunately, Ko's still struggling with complications with his kidneys and his lower extremedities.

As of August 19th, the doctors were thankfully able to remove the impella machine and lower the sedation medication. Ko is awake, and conscious of his surroundings.

Needless to say, it’s been an arduous journey, full of tears and worry for his family and friends, but especially, for his wife, Lum Lam. She is staying by his side at all hours, riding to the hospital early in morning and leaving late at night. As you may have guessed, his uncertain status of work in the coming months, the high cost of hospital care, surgeries, and ensuing recovery period is already making themselves known, and his tireless wife has been trying to tackle both the practical and emotional tasks laid before her.

Your contribution will provide ease and comfort during this difficult time and will go directly to his wife, Lum Lam. Any loving gift will help Ko get better sooner. Given also that they had recently moved to Seattle, your donations will go the extra mile to help Ko’s family find that support base.

We are incredibly grateful for your loving kindness. Though we wish Ko a complete recovery, his lifestyle and daily living has changed drastically, but we can help ease that burden and give Ko and Lum more time for recovery.

I will continue to update this page as I get news from Lum.
Thank you for your support.
