Ruidoso Shelter Animal Emergency

Yesterday afternoon, March 28th,  the Moon Mountain fire broke out in the mountain village of Ruidoso, New Mexico. The fire, located above Gavilan Canyon, continues to burn and has necessitated an evacuation of 37 animals from the Ruidoso Animal Shelter.

While we have an emergency plan in place and successfully evacuated all of the animals to our resale shop, we did not have enough crates to transport our dogs.  Volunteers and staff loaded animals into their vehicles. While this works in an emergency, it is not safe to have a loose animal in the car, especially one that is afraid and confused.  For safety reasons for both the animals and the drivers, we require additional large and medium dog crates.

Prior to the Moon Mountain fire we have experienced three small fires this year and fire season has only just begun.  We have enough small kennels to transport our small dogs and cats.  Our immediate need is to purchase an additional 15 extra large dog crates and 10 large crates to ensure that our animals may be transported safely when the next fire threatens our shelter. The approximate cost for an extra large crate is $120; the approximate cost for a large crate is $70.

The dogs, cats, staff and volunteers of the Ruidoso Animal Shelter and the Humane Society of Lincoln County New Mexico thank you for your support.
