[FEB 26  FINAL UPDATE]

salamat, thank you, merci.

I am so thankful for the amazing response I received when I shared this appeal and it is so thrilling to share: GOAL ACHIEVED!!!!!!!

When I reached my initial goal of $1240 in less than six days - I had to make a decision:

(1) Say thank you to the community for your urgent generosity, close up shop, and swiftly get to filming cute cat videos & making your cakes.

OR

(2) Increase my goal and bring light to the fact that simply inviting young racialized women to the table is not sufficient, but rather it means hitting some very real financial barriers as that young racialized woman.

I chose the latter and you all stepped up. Thank you.
That matters.

salamat. thank you. merci.

[ORIGINAL APPEAL - FEBRUARY 4, 2018]

In 2009, I visited the headquarters of the United Nations in New York City for the first time - a visit that made me decide to pursue a degree in International Relations and to dream about returning one day as an official delegate.

I have the chance to make that dream come true this March 10-17 as a member of the YWCA Canada delegation to the United Nations' 62nd Commission on the Status of Women

However, New York is a VERY expensive city and I need your help to raise the funds to get there. Please help me with the two biggest expenses: (1) a place to stay, and (2) a way to get there.

(1) HOTEL...................................................................$980 ($140/night for Karla & one other unfunded delegate)
(2) FLIGHT..................................................................$300 (Toronto - New York, return)
TOTAL GOAL............................................................$1280

Every single dollar helps me and a fellow racialized and unfunded delegate friend get to New York, and ensure that our young racialized voices are at the table.

I promise to share my journey throughout the week on social media. BUT, if you donate, I will send personalized insider updates on the key people I meet, critical issues being discussed, and the new connections that you are making possible for me, and by extension, for the Filipino-Canadian community. Check out the different giving levels & rewards on the right-hand side -------->>>>>

WHY KARLA?

My mom came to Canada from the Philippines via the Live-in Caregiver program (LCP) to pursue her dreams of seeing the world. Although she was a skilled accountant, she spent the first two years here caring for her employer's children while my grandparents raised me. The odds were stacked against us from the very beginning, but my mom has worked two, and even three jobs at once, as a single mother to ensure that I could pursue every opportunity to succeed - including funding that 2009 summer trip as a Canadian youth delegate to the Global Young Leaders Conference.

I'm asking for your support in funding this trip to New York because I wish to show my mom that her tireless hard work has made it possible for me to be at the table with international leaders, and have my voice heard on the very issues that have shaped her life - migrant workers' rights, precarious international labour patterns, family separation, and decolonisation.

I'm going to UNCSW62 for my mom.

I have the qualifications(BA, International Relations; 4 years of working & volunteering for women's organizations), inquisitive critical mindset (trained interdisciplinary - politics, history, feminism, social justice, cultural humility/competence, communications, performance art), multiple languages (English, French, Tagalog, Spanish), and overall warm interpersonal skills.

WHY DOES A FILIPINA-CANADIAN DELEGATE MATTER?

I have consistently found myself to be the only Filipina in the room throughout university, at my workplace, and in the boardroom. I am determined to change that.

Prior to the conference, I will reach out to Filipinas and Filipina-run organisations across Canada to ensure that I bring their issues to the table with me.

My mom is only one of the thousands of women and families who ultimately migrated to in Canada because of the LCP. As of 2016 (Stats Canada), there are over 800,000 people of Philippine descent living in Canada and the Philippines continues to be the top source country of recent immigrants. Filipinos might be the 4th largest visible minority group in Canada, yet we remain drastically underrepresented in politics, media, academia, and more.

My very presence at UNCSW62 is a key part of changing that narrative.

WHAT IS THE "UNCSW62"?

This meeting brings together international leaders, non-governmental organisations, and advocates from all regions of the world to discuss the most critical issues faced by women at the global scale.
