Japanese Gulch Charity Auction

The Japanese Gulch Group is preparing for our seventh annual community celebration and fundraiser.  This year’s, “Grow the Gulch-A New Beginning,” event is Saturday, February 7, 2015, at Rosehill Community Center in Mukilteo, at 5:30pm.  The remaining acres of Japanese Gulch have been purchased and now we need your support to properly restore and sustain the property.  Our goals are to educate the public, build trails, improve streams, enhance the fish ladder, and provide many other services in support of this forest. Japanese Gulch is used by walkers, hikers, runners, bikers, dog walkers, bird watchers, photographers and those seeking  relaxation in a natural setting.

The Japanese Gulch Group is a volunteer organization from the greater Puget Sound area that has been working for nine years to preserve and enhance the land in Mukilteo's Japanese Gulch for local and regional use and enjoyment.  Japanese Gulch Group advocates for outdoor recreation, wildlife and ecological preservation of the beautiful green spaces in and around Japanese Gulch. We promote the sustainable use of the forest, stewardship of the land, and the harmonious interaction between active people and local wildlife.

Now that Japanese Gulch has been preserved, we are moving into the next phases of our mission.  This year will be an interesting one for the gulch, with the development of the master plan under way.

Goals for 2015:

Help the city in any way we can to complete the Master Plan for the Japanese Gulch

Restore the Gulch: continue to remove invasive species and replace with native plants.

Sustainable recreation: continue to maintain the trails for community use.  We will continue to follow the guidance of  National Forest Service and IMBA (International Mountain Bike Association) for good trail practices.  We will continue to hold monthly work parties where we lead and educate volunteers in trail maintenance and repair.

What are we doing to work towards these goals?

We will continue to work with the city on the master plan and support activities while the plan is developed.

We have provided funds to the city to support restoring the gulch and will continue to do so as we are able.

We have promised the city funding to support moving the gate at the community garden in order to open up additional parking away from the busy street.

We will continue to maintain the trails in the gulch so they are safe and can continue to be enjoyed.

We will hold volunteer events so that the public can come out and contribute to the restoration and preservation of this wonderful resource.

We will continue to remove invasive species like holly, English ivy, blackberry, and laurel.  We will begin replanting native species like salmonberry, salal, blue and red huckleberry, and various species of fern.
