Hello, my name is Bonnie Meier. Our story started a year ago when I was 28 weeks pregnant with my 2nd son, Lincoln. We found out quickly this pregnancy was complicated and high risk. I had extremely low amniotic fluid and our son was measuring very small. The doctors told us that he had IUGR, which stands for Intrauterine Growth Restriction. I was put on hospital bed rest for the next month with routine heart monitorings and ultrasounds to make sure that he was doing okay.
The doctors decided that he would grow better on the outside, so at 34 weeks and 2 days Lincoln was born via C-section at 2 lbs 14 oz and 16 inches long. I got to kiss his head, and the nurses quickly took him up to the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). It was one of the scariest days of my life. I was able to vist my sweet son that night, and I got to hold his tiny body on my chest. He was perfect, even though he was connected to machines with tubes and wires all over him.
Over the next 3-1/2 weeks our little Lincoln made great strides with breathing, regulating his temperature, growing, and eating. With the help of the amazing nurses and doctors of the NICU our baby boy came home weighing only 4 lbs 4 oz. He will be turning 1 year old on February 26th, and he is as healthy as can be!
Our time in the hospital on bed rest and in the NICU was the most difficult time of our lives. I struggle to find the words to accurately explain how scary, stressful, and emotionally draining it all was. That is why I am setting up this page to raise money to give NICU families goody bags, in honor of Lincoln's 1st Birthday, to let them know that they are not alone and to give them hope for better days to come.
