Kitty Smith's Recovery

Donation protected
On May 30, 2018 Katherine "Kitty" Smith was found at her home after having an accident on her horse when no one was around.  Her horse was found saddled in the pasture along with her glasses and hearing aids.  Her sister, Pat, found her in her bed the next morning when she did not show up for work at Traverse County Care Center.

Kitty could not recall what happened.  An ambulance brought her to Sanford Medical Center in Wheaton, MN where they determined she sustained broken ribs and a severe head injury. Medical professionals in Wheaton decided to rush Kitty by helicopter to the Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, ND, where she was admitted to the Emergency Department and then the Intensive Care Unit.   Kitty spent three days in the ICU and was then moved to the medical floor where she spent another five days until she was medically stable.  On June 6, 2018, she was admitted to an acute rehab unit at Sanford in Fargo where she is receiving intense therapy every day to regain her strength and cognition.

Kitty has not lost her wit or desire to be independent through all of this!  The injury to her head left bleeding in her brain in several areas.  It has affected her balance, vision, speech, and memory.  She can recognize family during visits, but visits have been limited because of the Physician’s recommendations of a low-stimulus environment.  It will likely take several months for her brain to absorb the blood.  We have seen improvement, but are unclear what the lasting effects of the injury will be.  She requires 24 hour supervision, and will move to another short-term rehab unit soon.  The length of her stay cannot be determined as of yet.

Kitty is now dependent on family members to take care of her farm, horses, cats, and dog.  She is no longer able to work as a Nursing Assistant at the Traverse Care Center. While she has been hospitalized, her basement flooded during a storm.  She lives alone and will have medical expenses that far surpass her retirement income.

Kitty has been a care giver all of her life; to people AND animals.  This wonderful lady will appreciate any help you are willing to give! Funds will go directly into her checking account, which is managed by her children, to pay for these unexpected and extraordinary expenses.
