</div>Kitten season isn’t cute for every kitten — Q-Tip needs your help.
It isn’t unusual for us to get calls from cat owners in crisis.
Sometimes circumstances change — a move abroad, a new baby, illness, or financial stress.
We never judge.
We rarely say no.
But kitten season is different.
Every year, from March onwards, rescues are flooded with kittens that shouldn’t exist.
Unplanned litters. Very young cats already pregnant.
Kittens given away online with no checks.
Cats abandoned when the novelty wears off.
Kittens ending up sick or seriously underweight because nobody was prepared to care for them.
And every single one of them ends up needing help.
Some are lucky.
Cocoa, Lulu and Stripe were born safely in a Penny Paws foster home.
Their mum Nala was just five months old herself, already pregnant and trying to survive outside.
Those kittens never knew hunger or cold. They had warmth, constant care, proper food, and veterinary attention from day one.
Their new homes were carefully vetted — safe, permanent, financially able, and ready to take responsibility for life-long cat care.
We know what a cat needs, and we make sure they get it.
They are the lucky few.
Most kittens are not.
The crisis is real
Over a million kittens are born in the UK every year.
There aren’t enough safe homes.
Rescues are already full before kitten season hits full swing.
Lack of neutering, lack of education, and people treating kittens like disposable toys feed the same endless cycle.
We see the consequences every year:
Cats sold online with no checks
Kittens given as gifts, then abandoned when they get bigger
Sick kittens in homes that can’t afford veterinary care
Very young females already pregnant, adding to the next wave
And then the ones that get seriously sick — that’s where cases like Q-Tip come in.
Q-Tip’s story
Q-Tip is only seven months old.
He should be running around, causing mischief, playing with toys.
Instead, he is fighting for his life.
He came to Penny Paws after being given to a home that couldn’t cope financially or practically.
By the time he arrived, he was lethargic, barely eating, and showing signs of fluid build-up and inflammation.
Blood tests showed severe abnormalities — white blood cells dangerously high, showing serious infection or inflammation.
Laboratory testing confirmed a high positive feline coronavirus titre.
Together with his symptoms, the vets believe he has suspected FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis).
FIP is devastating.
Without treatment, it is almost always fatal.
There is a treatment now, but it is long, complicated, and extremely expensive.
And there are no guarantees.
The reality of rescue
Q-Tip has already needed multiple consultations, blood tests, lab work, medications, and ongoing monitoring.
The current vet estimates are:
£372.76 for initial antiviral medication
£713.93 for further treatment
And more costs still to come
Anyone in rescue knows what that means.
Credit cards maxed.
Piggy banks raided.
Sleepless nights.
Stress.
Worry.
And kitten season has only just begun.
We do not make money from this.
Penny Paws exists because ordinary people give their time, their homes, and often their own money to make sure cats do not suffer.
Adoption fees barely cover food, litter, vaccinations, neutering and transport.
Medical emergencies like Q-Tip’s stretch a small charity to breaking point.
And yet we cannot, will not, turn him away.
We need your help
Q-Tip didn’t choose to be born.
He didn’t choose to get sick.
He didn’t choose to need rescue.
But he depends on us completely.
We will not give up on him if there is a chance he can be saved.
We just need help to keep going.
Every donation goes directly to:
• Veterinary treatment
• FIP medication
• Ongoing monitoring and care
• Long-term foster support
• Emergency costs of kitten season rescue
Even a few pounds helps.
