KITH + KIN GRAPHIC NOVEL PHASE 1 FUNDRAISING

WHAT IS KITH + KIN?

A Graphic Novel!

Curiously normal and frightfully fantastic, KITH + KIN–written by Brittany Matter and Heather Ayres–brings together the monstrous family drama of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein with the dark shades of sadness and heartwarming messages of Big Fish (2003).

A collection of short comics, KITH + KIN will feature 10 artists across 10 stories that will explore the nature of familial relationships, the destructive behaviors that exist inside of them, and the importance of family bonds in overcoming the monsters that lurk inside us all.

WHAT’S THIS GOFUNDME YOU SAY!?

We’re looking to start the next part of the book-making process! The process includes hiring collaborators to help us design the cover and logo, editing the scripts, and other additional marketing costs. As indie creators, it truly takes a village to bring creative works to life. With your support through donations to the KITH + KIN GoFundMe, we will be able to pay for the upfront costs of self-publishing this book.

We would love your help to accomplish our dreams of making our first graphic novel!

WHAT HAVE WE ACCOMPLISHED ALREADY?

We’ve finished writing the scripts! Plus, we’ve begun the editing process with Nicole D’Andria and David Brothers who are polishing our scripts for the artists we’ll bring on board.

As seen in the GoFundMe video, we’ve already made a comic with artist Sally Cantirino who helped us bring SPITTING IMAGE, the first of our 10 stories, to life!

For the last couple of months, we’ve been researching the best printer, writing press materials, and planning book promotion events (cart before the horse, well we say, bring on the pressure because this book is gonna get made and nothing’s going to stop us!). We’ve also been looking for artists to bring on board to help us draw the book (we’re writers so we need all the help we can get!).

WHEN WILL YOU SEE KITH + KIN ON YOUR BOOKSHELF?

We are hoping to have this book be fully realized and in people’s hands by fall 2020!

COST BREAKDOWN

We anticipate two phases of fundraising. The first phase includes initial setup costs. The second phase, to occur in the spring of 2020, will cover the costs of hiring artists and printing the book.

Detailed below is a cost breakdown for phase 1 of fundraising. The pie chart includes the costs to hire collaborators that will help us make this book a reality. Collaborators include an editor to polish our scripts; a logo designer and cover artist; and a video editor to help us make a book trailer. Other costs including creating print and digital marketing assets, and paying for outside counsel to ensure our collaborator contracts are shipshape.

FOR THE LOVE OF STORYTELLING

From a young age, we were drawn to stories told through graphic novels and comic books. The immersive experience of reading heroic, Shakespearean-esque tales in bold color delighted our imaginations and stirred within us a desire to tell our tales. After several years of editing, writing reviews, and writing our short comics, we have decided to pursue our dream of creating a full-fledged graphic novel.

We’re excited to bring you an original graphic novel highlighting stories about the complexities of family life and the monsters that reside within them. Often uncomfortable and at times stingingly tender, each story examines universal human experiences through the lens of the fantastic begging the question, what truly makes a monster?
