Kirin Battle Against Parvovirus

Who Is Kirin: Kirin is a English mastiff / Shepard who is currently about 9 weeks old. She is smart takes to training well. she is our family dog and IS Our families Christmas present.

When / who did we get her from:  back on the 25th we purchased Kirin one of 8 in the litter (The spiffy runt). the breeder we purchased her from was less then a good individual, she was basically a puppy mill raising three different breeds in her basement (we didn't know this at the time). if you are curios why Parvovirus is becoming a threat to Rhode Islanders.... its because of this woman.  of the litter Kirin is one of the last 4 puppies known to be surviving.

Sickness: The first 3 days we had her she showed no signs, was very active and playful! loved every thing she sees and loved to give kisses. picked up, commands like come here, sit, and shake remarkably fast. on the fourth night she became very ill. we took her to the vet who contacted Scpa and helped in apprehending the woman. at the time the vet believed she had a different but similar disease to Parvo... we got some antibiotics / anti-nausea pills and it was at this time that she turned down, water and food. we had to do something... the vet followed up with us in the morning. mentioned that if her state didn't change we should take her to "Ocean State Veterinary Specialties" we took her that afternoon but not before something shook us to the core. she snapped out of her dazed state and crawled through our tv stand and became trying to crawl behind the dresser... like a wolf in a pack she didn't want us to go through this... she was fleeing cause she knew she was going to die.

What is Parvovirus: Parvovirus is an incredibly contagious virus (dog to dog). it is known as the puppy killer. if untreated it has a 100% mortality rate. symptoms of parvovirus is, Bloody diarrhea, Vomiting, Fever (never had this), Lethargy, Anorexia, Weight loss, Weakness, Dehydration, and Depression. this is a dual stage killer, it damages the inner lining of the puppies intestines/ stomach of "protective materials" aka "mucus" and weakens the puppies immune system to fight of bacterial infections... also Sepsis can be a danger due to the thinning of the intestines. most puppies that survive the three to four day in intensive care, make a full recovery.  but even in intensive care, the chance of living is still 62-92%.

Ocean State Veterinary Specialties: it was at this time that we found out what she had was Parvo. also that they had two of the same puppies from the litter there as well and that her older brother made a full recovery. this was promising. the doctor braced us with the news. treating Parvo will cost on the lower end... 3200 and higher end 5200 dollars. We fell in love with Kirin we weren't going to let her die or abandon her! so we took out a loan for 3200 and this was depleted in 3-4 days. her daily treatment is 850, plasma bags (to replace her blood from the bloody stool) costs 250 a bag. we have been paying out of pocket for a lot of the other things to try to manage her vet bills. she is doing better but its still touch and go daily.

Thank you listening to our story and we appreciate any help we can get.
