KIPP Sharpstown Orchestra Instrument Drive

Hello,
My name is Martin Dimitrov. I’m a professional violinist and educator. I have been teaching for over a decade and this is my second year in KIPP Sharpstown College Prep.

Sharpstown is a Fine Arts middle school and the students have the option to choose between Orchestra, Choir, Dance, Theater and Visual Arts. Once they select their Fine Art, they take that Fine Art every day for the 4 years they are at KSCP.

Being a professional violinist who studied under Sergiu Luca at Rice University, I know how important the quality of the instrument for the learning of the students. He used to ask us this question: “ How are you supposed to learn about a good sound, when your instrument is not capable of producing one?”

When I joined KSCP I found a lot of broken instruments and instruments that were a very low quality that do not serve our students[‘ learning. For donors that don’t have an experience with string instruments, it will be useful for me to explain the uniqueness of them. String instruments are different than wind and brass instruments and percussion instruments, which can be manufactured and their quality predicted. Best string instruments are handmade and fitted by professional luthiers.

Because of the pandemic, I brought broken instruments to a violin shop and I was told that I would have to spend more money repairing them than the actual cost of the instrument, which is less than a $200. School programs in Houston and Katy ISD spend between $2000 and $two 3000 per instrument, which is of a excellent quality and can serve their programs for many years. Currently many KSCP students don’t have an instrument at home and cannot afford to buy or rent one.

Want to join me in making a difference? I'm raising money to benefit the KIPP Sharpstown Orchestra Program, and any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me.
