THE PUSHBACK is a riveting look at a cross section of progressive Texans who are standing up and fighting for social justice. This film has been entirely independent and self-financed — our way of engaging with our democracy, using our creative voices, and amplifying the causes of people we believe in.
In 2018 we began making THE PUSHBACK, capturing inspirational stories of people getting involved with our democracy and standing up to discrimination. We centered our story in Texas, a notoriously "Red" state, and followed people who were working hard tonight against the Trump Administration's politics of cruelty -- activists, new politicians, clergy, ranchers, teachers, former law enforcement officials, and everyday citizens. Our final film chronicles the efforts of these folks from 2018 on through early 2020.
Our documentary was selected to premiere at SXSW 2020 and then... the pandemic derailed us. For the rest of 2020 we have worked diligently to come up with a release strategy. Our film was selected by Woodstock Film Festival, El Paso Film Festival, and the Bullock Texas State History Museum for virtual screenings. We also orchestrated a live premiere at Blue Starlite Drive-In theater in Austin, Texas and premiered the movie on October 6th, 2020.
THE PUSHBACK is NOW AVAILABLE on Apple, Amazon, Alamo on Demand, Fandango, and Vimeo! Other platforms are in the works as well. In the next month before the November 3rd election we are going to work hard to spread the film's message far and wide, activating our impact campaign and reaching would-be voters, volunteers, and grass-roots political organizations who are doing everything possible to GET OUT THE VOTE!
If you're here now reading this you probably already agree that this is the most important election of our liftetime. What's on the ballot is indeed more than just a handful of policies -- it's the spirit of our nation. Our film captures the best of that spirit -- volunteerism, social awareness, compassion, and citizens engaging in our democracy while standing up tall and "pushing back" against politics of cruelty and division.
In addition to what's in the film, we have put out some interesting supplemental materials available on our website . We have a Voter Engagement Toolkit available for free download now. We are also working on expanding the official YouTube Channel for THE PUSHBACK which is loaded with additional content to expand the conversation and discoverability around the film and its themes.
In 2019 we launched this GoFundMe campaign and it helped us to finish the film! The outpouring of support was overwhelming. If you can contribute now, please know that all of the funds raised are going directly into our "final push" impact campaign to get the film's message out to as many people as possible -- through ad buys, marketing, and other forms of outreach. We always hoped to use THE PUSHBACK as a tool to promote meaningful engagement in our democracy, and increase voter turnout in 2020 -- NOW IS THE TIME!
