Kim Powers Memorial Fund

Donation protected
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to support families of open-heart patients who have suffered a stroke. We wish to use Kim’s story and experience to bring comfort by delivering care packages to the affected families during their extended hospital stay.

Contributions in his memory may also be sent to Old Camp United Methodist Church, 77 Old Camp Church Road, Carrollton, GA 30117.

On Thursday, May 3rd, Kim underwent open-heart surgery to repair two leaky valves at Emory-Midtown in Atlanta. Although he showed no symptoms, and the surgery was not immediately urgent, the surgery would have been needed within the next six months. Both valves were repaired successfully, and the heart surgery went well. Kim remained in ICU until Tuesday due to the Atrial Fibrillation (irregular heart beat) he developed after the surgery. On Wednesday, Kim had such a wonderful day, feeling his best since the morning of the surgery. The plans were for he and Cindy, who had not left his side since surgery, to come home by Friday.

Unfortunately, Kim suffered a massive stroke to the left side of his brain early Thursday morning. They transferred him from Emory-Midtown to Emory University Hospital, where he underwent an emergency surgical thrombectomy to remove the clot. Immediately following the surgery, Kim regained no movement to the right side of his body and was unable to speak. Since the clot was in the largest artery of the brain, the damage continued to spread. By early Friday morning, the brain had swollen very rapidly causing the damage to encompass the entire brain, affecting all necessary bodily responses needed for a quality life.

Kim went home to celebrate with the Lord, on Saturday morning, May 12th, at 11:20 AM. Kim’s last hours were spent with his family by his side praying, singing hymns, listening to Jimmy Buffet songs (of course), and saying final words. Although it does not make this time any easier, we know it was God’s will for Kim to be home, and we are so thankful for the precious moments we had with him.

We thank you all for your prayers, support, and encouragement during this time.
