WE MADE IT!!! Our full teams will be attending Nationals! THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!! Any additional funds raises will now go towards next year's State Championship and then our next National tournament in 4 years.
This has been incredible for us coaches, families and most of all, the students who have seen that through their commitment and hard work, their goals are met and dreams can come true. Thank you!

I am pleased to announce that Killip Chess Power is going to Super Nationals – the Olympics of Chess. It occurs once every four years. Five thousand participants are expected to attend from across the United States. The event takes place in Nashville, TN May 11th – 15th. The last time Killip could afford to send a team to this event we placed a team at 3rd in the nation.
Students work Monday – Thursday after school to learn better ways to compete against each other and eventually opponents they meet at Tournaments. Research documents character development benefits such as strong self-motivation, positive response to failure and increased self-confidence.
The game of chess and the skills it fosters offer a strong alignment with STEM education.
Science – Scientific Method (Develop a hypothesis, experiment, analyze and report on results) is utilized on a daily basis in our games and to improve our level of play
Technology – Our students have learned to research and combine information from multiple digital resources (online tutorials, Grandmaster game databases, tactic’s trainers, etc.) to improve our skill.
Engineering – Engineers identify a problem, brainstorm possible solutions, implement a plan and analyze its outcomes and revise based on the results. This IS the game of chess. We do this multiple times in every game we play.
Math – Chess players continuously calculate the strength/weakness of candidate moves in a game of chess. We also use an algebraic coordinate grid system to notate and plot the position and moves of pieces on the board. This allows us to play back through the game where we analyze it for strengths and weaknesses.
Our current need is $11,000.00. We have budgeted $700/student and chaperone. Families have put forth the effort to raise $21,000.00 towards the trip but it doesn’t appear we will be able to reach our goal for Nationals. This means students that have done their part will be left behind.
Out of the economically disadvantaged neighborhood of Sunnyside, Killip Chess Power stands as a strong pillar of community pride and success for Sunnyside and Flagstaff. Yet we are kept from realizing our full potential under the constraints of our current funding capacity. Please help us overcome this barrier by funding one or more students ($700 each) to the National Championship in Nashville, Tennessee. Your donation will go directly to a student or students who has worked every day in our program (some of them for years) that will not otherwise get the chance to participate in this once in a lifetime experience.
