Jessica's Smile

This is the story of Jessica (or Mum as I call her) and why I am trying to raise money for her teeth.
Here's what you have to understand about my mom, she spends so much of her time and limited finances on other people she barely has anything left for herself. She works for a non-profit called Masada House, Inc. in Farmington New Mexico. Masada House is dedicated to helping women have a second chance. The residents of Masada House are mostly parolee's and ex addicts trying to get their life together, and they all depend on my mom. Her job includes administering medication, monitoring activities, communicating with parole and probation officers, and managing the house. Managing the house includes meal plans, grocery shopping, dealing with conflicts between residents, managing chore arrangements, and so much more. She also works with the board and tirelessly works to get the house more funding so they can help as many people as possible. Over the past few years I have watched in amazement as my mom has tackled obstacle after obstacle associated with this job and not batted an eye. She is currently working to help open a similar house for men. All of that is just part of the job discription, but my mom continuously goes above and beyond the call of duty. It has become her personal pet project to research and post job opportunities not only for the women in the house but for anyone in need. She also spends countless hours and dollars of her own time and money driving the residents to and from work, interviews, AA and NA meeting, and giving them the opportunity to visit family members and repair relationships; none of which is required of her.
My mom continuously gives not only to the members of Masada House but to those lucky enough to be her friends as well. Recently one of her friends was diagnosed with cancer. Jessica helped raise money for her treatments and shaved her head in solidarity with her friend.
Now, the woman who gives so much to so many needs our help. She recently experienced some damage to her two front teeth. Temporary caps were placed on both teeth almost 20 years ago. Those caps were only supposed to last 3-5 years. So now she needs a more permanent solution. Because she works for a non-profit she doesn't have insurance and Medicaid won't cover a dental procedure they have deemed "cosmetic". The dentist even went as far as to suggest that she pull most or all of her top teeth and have dentures made so that some of the cost would be covered. However, she is only 39! I definitely don't want her to have to get dentures not only because it is unnecessary but can actually cause more problems down the road.
Two dentists have quoted us $900 for each tooth and $129.38 in tax resulting in a grand total of $1929. This isn't necessarily just a cosmetic procedure. Her teeth are "paper thin" as she keeps saying. It is only a matter of time before one or both break and cause damage requiring a painful root canal.
Any little bit helps! She has given so much to her community and to people who have so little. She deserves this! At the very least she deserves to have her teeth taken care of. I am a 21 year old barely getting by and if I had the resources I would more than happily shoulder the cost of my moms procedure. But I don't have the resources so I am asking for people who do have those resources and can find it in their hearts to give whatever they can to help out this woman who more than deserves it! She has such a beautiful heart and soul, let's get her a beautiful smile to match.
