Victims of Kiimi Island Fire

Donation protected

Kiimi Island is in a remote corner of Lake Victoria in Uganda, home to 5000 people who migrated with their few possessions, looking for a livelihood and for security.  As you can see in the video below which was developed by the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative in 2013, conditions on the island were never easy.  But then in the early hours of Sunday, October 15th,  a fire burned down almost every building on the island, destroying what little they owned and leaving 2000 families homeless.  Several people died in the fire, including children.
I apologize for again reaching out to my friends and family with a request for funds, but because Kiimi Island is so isolated and because the healthcare and emergency systems in Uganda are already overburdened, there is just no safety net for this vulnerable population. I'm well acquainted with the people of Kiimi,  having worked with them for almost 10 years on health and HIV prevention projects.  The community leaders have indicated that the most urgent needs are for food, blankets, building materials and medical care for those who were injured.  Any contribution will be most appreciated and put to good use. I will be personally involved in making sure that funds are utilized efficiently and transparently. Thank you so much.
