Surgery Ship & Mercy Ships - Help Maimouna & Yaya

Donation protected
I'll never forget meeting Yaya and Maimouna in West Africa in 2013.

Yaya is a really smart kid and would love to be a journalist. I really think he could do this - but he needs to be able to go to school and now due to a disease his legs are twisting again and he can no longer walk easily. He desperately needs a new leg brace.

Maimouna is a shy and sweet girl. She had free surgery in 2013 to remove a large tumor over her eye - but it came back and required more surgery. Making things harder still, she is going blind in her other eye. She urgently needs blind skills training before she loses her remaining sight.

With a relatively small amount of money, I know we can radically change their futures.

What Yaya needs:
  • New leg brace
  • School fees to attend the local school in Conakry
  • School clothes, shoes, text books and pens
  • Phone and internet credit so that the support team and medical staff can communicate with Yaya and his family

What Maimouna needs:

  • Blind skills training - preparing Maimouna as quickly as possible for life without her sight
  • School fees to attend the local school in Conakry, Guinea
  • School clothes, shoes, text books and pens
  • Phone and internet credit so that the support team and medical staff can communicate with Maimouna and her family

$6,200 will cover the critical medical help they need this year, and keep Maimouna and Yaya in school for the next three years. Any money raised over this amount will extend this support into the future.

I first met the kids when I was in Guinea, West Africa, filming a documentary called The Surgery Ship . The kids had just received free, life-changing surgery on board the Ship - it was exhilarating to see the kids getting their childhoods back.

But when I returned to Guinea in 2016 I discovered that things were changing dramatically. We need to raise $6,200 for medical expenses that will keep their health on track.
