My name is Kaia and I am going into 5th grade. I am helping to organize the families Belong Together: kids standing up for the kids gathering at Lake Merritt on Saturday June 30th at 10:30 a.m.
Let me tell you how this all started. I was looking over my mom's shoulder at her facebook and I saw a crying kid who looked about 2 and there was an officer of some sort standing near him. I asked her what that was and she told me that kids were getting separated from their families at the border. I cried for about 10 minutes thinking about how it would be like if I got separated from my family then I thought about what we could do. I remembered learning about the Birmingham Children's March and realized kids can make a difference. I know families aren't getting separated now but it is still not right for families to be put in jail after they came here seeking safety.
As a kid I know that I can do something and I want to encourage others to do something too.
The kids standing up for kids gathering is part of the Families Belong Together day of action. We thought we would only have a few people there but now over 800 people are coming! Now we need money for things like stages and sound systems and supplies so we are asking for your donations. Please join us in helping kids stand up for kids. Thank you!
