Alastair's History Olympiad Dream

Donation protected
Alastair began talking about history with his Grandpa when he was in Kindergarten.  He has always had a passion for history, politics and international affairs. Now in Grade 8, Alastair's passion has blossomed into interests in analysing current and historical events, formal debating and, surreptitiously, editing Wikipedia history entries.

After months of preparation, last year Alastair won 1st Place at the National Canadian History Championships in Ottawa.  He won 1st personally, for his grade level (Bee), and his team won 1st to win the Bowl. On April 28th, 2018, he also became the Canadian Champion for Geography! This has qualified him to represent Team Canada in the bi-annual International History & Geography Olympiads (http://www.historyolympiad.com) which are taking place in Berlin, Germany this year from July 11th-22nd.  Since then he has been studying with the hope to bring the 2018 International History/Geography Bowl and Bee titles home to Canada.  After Berlin, Alastair would like to spread the importance of history to other young people believing that an understanding of history can help all of us navigate the geopolitical complexities in our ever-changing world.

An unexpected loss of previous funding has created the possibility that he may not be able to fulfill his dream of participating in this Olympiad. The funds raised here will help cover costs for return airfare from Toronto to Berlin, accommodations for Alastair and a chaperone (for the team), as well as participation fees.

Alastair is also an accomplished musician having performed in classical concerts and opera as a solo vocalist with some of the top orchestras in Canada, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. To help raise money a fundraising concert, "Then We Take Berlin",  will take place at Glenforest S.S. (Tuesday, May 29th @ 7:30pm) where Alastair and other musicians who have generously donated their time will participate.  Here's the link for more info and to buy tickets:  https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/then-we-take-berlin-fundraising-concert-tickets-45383889435?aff=es2
However, it's unlikely that this will cover the expected costs so we're looking for support to get Alastair and a chaperone to Berlin!

Alastair's hoping that you will help him realise his dream.
