Hi, we are Lily and Layla, two North American volunteers currently working in a rural community in Tanzania bordering the Serengeti. This school was founded by Mr. Baraka and Juliana in 2009 to provide education for underprivileged Maasai children in the area. What started as a small project out of their own home, has now turned into a school providing education to over 300 students ranging from pre school to grade 7. Many of these students board at the school as their villages are too far away for daily transport. Although some of the students families can afford to pay school fees in full, some can only afford half and others none at all. Because of this, it is rather challenging to accumulate enough funds for the continued improvement of the school and thus Juliana and Mr. Baraka rely mainly on donations to do so.
Currently the school is most in need of money to finish building two more additional classrooms. As of right now, there is 70 children in both the grade 1 and pre K class making it near impossible for the children to focus and learn. Finishing the construction of these additional rooms would allow the children to be split into two groups, making teaching and learning easier for everyone.
Having volunteered at this school for two weeks now we can both attest to the importance of this project. All the students are eager to learn, hard working and most important of all kind and caring. You can truly tell how much the opportunity to study at BEMS means to them from the way they smile all day, every day. If you have the means to donate to this cause the students, staff and volunteers here at BEMS would be immensely grateful.
Thank you!
