Kidney Donors Rock - Sue's Journey

Donation protected
Sue was diagnosed with polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) 30 Years ago. Many people do not even know how ill Sue really is. PKD is a genetic disorder which causes multiple cysts to grow within the kidneys. Unlike the usually harmless simple kidney cysts that can form in the kidneys later in life, PKD cysts can change the shape of your kidneys, including making them much larger. Currently, one of Sue’s kidneys is the size of football! PKD is a chronic, progressive, life threatening disease.

Even though Sue has had this disease for a large part of her life she has not let that stop her from enjoying life. Sue is an active member of Our Lady of Grace Church, a member of the Moose for a number of years volunteered and held many important roles within the Boy Scouts even as to receive the Silver Beaver Award, which is given to Scouters of exceptional character who have provided distinguished service to young people.

Sue has been an employee at Minot State University for 12 years as well and employee for Minot Recreation Commission for the last 11 years.  She has also served as a waitress in the dining room at the Moose Lodge for a number of years. A lot of healthy people work only one job let alone three. This just goes to show you what kind of a person Sue is.

In August 2017, Sue was put onto the Living Donor list and in January of this year, she was put onto the Deceased Donor list. Being placed on these lists is wonderful news, however, the average wait once on the Deceased Donor list can be anywhere from 3 to 5 years.

So, Sue would wait. Then on July 19, 2018, an angel answered her prayers and the perfect match was found! A living donor! What an AMAZING gift to give as well as receive.

Sue will be leaving the beginning of September to prepare for her transplant on September 6, 2018. Medical bills as well as other financial needs are going to be adding up. Sue will be on anti-rejection medication for the rest of her life so that her body doesn’t reject the new kidney. These medicines are expensive & not all will be covered by insurance.

I have no doubt that Sue’s family and friends will join me to help support her through this tough time.  If you can look inside your hearts to assist her in her fight, then please do so. Every little bit helps, more than a person can imagine. I do ask however, that you keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers in the coming months. The battle has just begun.
