The odds were 1 in 7.5 million. Think of that number! That's why for potential kidney recipients like my niece's father, the wait for a donor kidney averages 3 to 5 YEARS. In our family, just like in yours, when you say that "the unimaginable has happened" we're talking about something truly terrible. Last Wednesday, however, that was not the case.
After just over a year of waiting for Joe, and months of waiting for all of us who'd volunteered to be tested as possible donors, my husband's phone rang. It was Emory University Hospital in Atlanta calling to telling him that not only was he a full and direct match for Joe, he'd passed every physical test they'd put him through several weeks ago, and with flying colors. 7.5 million to 1 are the odds of finding a full, direct match in a non-familial donor. And I happen to be married to the ONE.
Right now we await the final paperwork to be signed and finalized, and we anticipate the donation and transplant surgeries to happen, simultaneously, the week of November 20; Dave's 52nd birthday. Joe's insurance will cover all of Dave's medical expenses, but what's left are the travel, housing, meals, and lost wages that are all part of making this life-saving surgery a reality. We expect the total of all expenses to come in at around $2600, and would so appreciate your help in assisting us with reaching this goal. Joe has offered to cover the expenses for Dave and myself to get to Atlanta for the surgery and whatever we need for our time there, but with his own astronomical expenses, we'd rather not put any additional financial strain on Joe or his family.
