Kiama Community Radio Start Up

In a time when communications and media platforms are in abundance and big is seen as better, the world has been hit sideways by COVID-19. Suddenly we now see that smalland localhad been neglected, and that it should have been our focus all along.

At the March Kiama Central Precinct meeting, the idea of a local community radio station was floated as a way of reuniting the community and combatting the unexpected isolation that has been forced upon us.

Currently no radio service, community or otherwise, is dedicated to the Kiama Local Government Area (LGA), so the idea ofKiama Community Radio (KCR) was born.

The station’s objective is to connect the many different groups that make up the Kiama LGA, from Gerroa to Minnamurra, Jamberoo to Kiama, connecting local artists with new audiences, local businesses with their customers and providing a platform for community groups to spread the word about what they are doing.

The arts sector in particular has suffered on two fronts, with engagements drying up overnight and casual work in the hospitality and tourism industry, which many in the arts community rely on, also hard hit.

The small team that picked up the idea of the Kiama Community Radio has grown to include a diverse range of experts and enthusiasts living in the Kiama LGA, realising the basic principle of KCR: for the community, by the community.  KCR is on track to launch the Pilot program, a weekly one-hour-long show via the new KCR website in June 2020, expanding to a longer format later in the year depending on the public response.

To get started we need funds for licensing, insurance, equipment, setting up the online platform and marketing. Much we can do ourselves, but in line with
our intention to support artist and businesses in the community, we want to be able to pay for some of the skills and expertise we need where necessary.

When the current crisis passes, we do not know what the 'new normal' will be. However we’re pretty sure that, whatever happens, the Kiama LGA will benefit in the long run by pooling our skills and resources and creating something together that has the potential to be a positive force in the community; keeping us united, supported, connected.

If you’d like to support us in this endeavour or contribute your time and expertise, please email us at [email redacted].au

KCR looks forward to providing this service to the Kiama Community.
