Message from Thailand's Honorary Consul-General in Brisbane, Mr Andrew W. Park:
In early July, Khun Nattahphon Aowtrakool (Top), a 26 year old international student from Thailand, collapsed in Brisbane and was rushed to Royal Brisbane Hospital. He spent some weeks in the intensive care unit where fluid was drained from his brain. Shortly thereafter he was diagnosed with Stage 3 Anaplastic Astrocytoma (brain cancer). The cancer doctors are recommending a 6 week course of radiation treatment (he is halfway through this now) followed by 3-5 months of chemotherapy treatment. Khun Top is unable to travel at the moment and the Thai community through the Thai Australia Friendship (TAF) group and the Thai-Australian Association of Queensland (TAAQ) has been supporting him and his sister with accommodation and costs. I would like to thank both organisations for their assistance. However given the length of time he will be required to stay here the family - which has limited financial means - requires financial support from the broader Thai community to cover medical costs, accommodation, health insurance, food and general living expenses. It is anticipated that the total amount required will be up to AUD$20,000.
As Thailand's Honorary Consul-General in Brisbane I have been working closely with the family and the local Thai community regarding this matter, and am pleased to confirm this is a legitimate case. The funds raised through GoFundMe will be managed by the Honorary Thai Consulate General Brisbane and will be deposited directly into Khun Top's account and I will meet with the family regularly to review financial and other matters. At the conclusion of the fundraising campaign a full report will be sent to all donors. Thank you everyone for your kind support of a young Thai man and his family who have had a very difficult time and face a challenging period ahead.
Please note this is the only official fundraising method which has been approved by Khun Top and his family.
