Khoti - Handmade Mexican Products

Khoti is an initiative that seeks to create change through the fair trade of handmade Mexican products. The basic tenet is simple: paying what is fair for the products the artisans make. By doing this, Khoti will address issues of inequality and exploitation, giving artisans the opportunity to invest in their families and communities and thus strengthening the social fabric.

Khoti is not just a business. It is a multi-faceted project that seeks to create social change as much as ensuring economic solvency.

We are raising startup funds to set up a website and buy equipment for the production of the products we will sell. Here is the breakdown of how we will use the funds:

Website design and set-up: $900
Six Singer Promise 1412 sewing machines: $150 each x 6= $900
Six irons for clothes: $25 each x 6 = $150
Brand registration: $150
Video and photo production: $400

While these artisans have been making many products for a long time, it speaks to their situation that only 1 of them actually owns a sewing image and an iron. That is why we intend to purchase the equipment so that they are all able to have access to what they need.

The biggest challenge for the artisans we work with is the lack of employment. They live in a village about one hour and a half away from a bigger city. They often do not have enough work. Unfortunately, because of this the few people who do make it to the town to buy their products often bargain and end up paying a meager price for the products.

We plan to change that by creating a website and selling the scarves abroad. Our goal is to sell 56 scarves a month which equals each artisan making 4 a month.

The first product we plan to sell at Khoti is a beautiful scarf embroidered by the artisans:

Production will start in October and at the beginning, we will focus on selling in Germany. The reason for that is that another member of my team and I will be living there. We will send one big shipment to Germany a month and will then send them from there. We would love to send to all over the world but we need partners as sending directly from Mexico is quite expensive.

Scarves will be sold for $40 USD or 35 euros. The equivalent of $25 USD will go to the artisans and the rest will be spent on administrative costs. Part of those costs includes buying the materials which will be then given to the artisans. This is considerably more of what they usually get for their work!

If you have any questions about the project please send us a message!

We will send a scarf to anybody donating $500 or more. Unfortunately, I cannot promise you will get it immediately, but you will when we start production!

Thank you for all your support.
