Help me go to Oglethorpe University

Hello! My name is Luis Pereira. I am a senior at Wiregrass Ranch High School in Wesley Chapel, and I'll be graduating in May. I am in need of help that would greatly be appreciated.

My family and I came to America from Venezuela about a year and a half ago, escaping an unbearable environment of threats and political persecution. As we were fleeing the country, our only possesions were whatever we could fit in our bags.

It wasn't easy for us, and at one point we were homeless, sleeping in our car or wherever we could someone who would let us stay the night, with me and my brothers having to go to school in the morning. Thankfully, when we needed it the most, we received an inmense amount of help from the community, through which we were able to get back on our feet.

Despite all the difficulties I've faced, through dedication and hard work I've managed to stand out at school, keeping high marks, taking part of organizations such as NHS, NSHSS, and student government, and winning Wiregrass' TEDx speech competition in 2016. I've also been a speaker for Pasco County Schools, speaking about the importance of one's voice, at the 2016 PCS Leadership Kickoff.

Given my involvement in community service and leadership activities, I was named a Civic Engagement Scholar by Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. This award includes a full tuition scholarship, which covers more than half of the costs during the next 4 years. I'm planning to major in Biology, in order to later pursue a career in the medical field.

Despite this great opportunity, I am still faced with the prospect of having to pay around $4000 a semester in room and board, which is a big challenge for me and my parents, who work blue-collar jobs to provide for me and my brothers. Even though I'm also working to save money for the fall, I know it will be hard to be able to pay that first semester.

It's been a long journey, and I've witnessed first hand how hard work pays off. I've never given up despite the difficulties, and I'll keep my positive attitude as I go now to college. This is why I ask you today to help me meet my goal and achieve my dream. You will not only help me get an education, you will give me the opportunity to help my parents provide for my little brothers, and to one day be able to give back to the community that helped us so much.

Thank you so very much for your help! It really means the world to me, even if you just share this in social media it helps a lot!
