Lately, life has been incredibly hard for us. <strong><em>For the past four weeks</em></strong>, <strong>Daniel</strong> has been in the hospital, and we’ve received the same heartbreaking news from doctors at two different hospitals: his condition is not going to improve. They’ve told us that my brother could pass away at any time. Facing this reality after everything we’ve already endured feels overwhelming.

<div><strong>Daniel’s</strong> story began before I was born. He was born on <strong>July 28, 2001</strong>, but his birth was not the joyful beginning most families expect. He was born with<strong><em> Spina Bifida</em></strong>, a serious birth defect where the spinal cord doesn’t develop properly in the womb. For those unfamiliar with <strong><em>spina bifida, it can cause a range of complications, often requiring surgeries and lifelong medical support.</em></strong> For <strong>Daniel</strong>, it meant he would likely need a wheelchair and face significant challenges in communication and mobility. But despite this, our mother was determined to give him the best life possible, surrounding him with love and care.

<div>He might have still been able to tell us how he was feeling or share simple conversations, but life had other plans.

<div>Unfortunately, when <strong>Daniel</strong> was just<em> two years old</em>, tragedy struck. At that point, I was only a baby myself, having been born on <strong>November 24</strong> of the previous year. According to my mother, who has carried this story in her heart for years, <strong>Daniel</strong> had to be rushed to the hospital with a severe emergency. He was<strong><em> diagnosed with blood clots</em></strong>, a rare and dangerous condition, especially for a young child with his fragile health. The doctors decided that he needed multiple oxygen tubes to help him breathe. My mother, to this day, believes that the doctors’ decision to place so many tubes on such a small child ultimately caused his condition to worsen dramatically. Since that day, <strong>Daniel </strong>has been unable to speak, eat, or move on his own. He is completely dependent, and he has lived his life without being able to fully experience the world around him. Our brother, the one who would have grown up alongside us, was now trapped in a state where he couldn’t experience the world as most of us do. The brother I would have grown up with, shared memories with, and talked to as a friend was no longer able to engage with the world.

<div>Our family’s life has revolved around caring for <strong>Daniel</strong> ever since. My mother, who has taken on the role of his primary caregiver, has dedicated her life to his needs.<strong> Daniel’s </strong>combined <strong>d<em>iagnoses—spina bifida, the blood clots, and his current unresponsive state</em></strong>—mean he relies on us for everything. He cannot tell us how he feels or even experience the simple moments that connect families. The brother I might have shared memories and conversations with, growing up side by side, cannot interact with the world in the ways most people take for granted. His mind and body remain locked away, and although we are there with him every day, we can only imagine the isolation he might feel. My mother has fought for him, loved him, and been there for him in ways only a mother could yet, despite everything, my mother has never given up on him, nor has she stopped fighting for him.

<div>When I was a teenager, we faced yet<em> another crisis </em>with <strong>Daniel</strong>. I remember the four of us—my mom, my sister, who was only six at the time, <strong>Daniel</strong>, and me—all making yet another trip to the hospital. This time, the news was again difficult to hear. <strong>Daniel </strong>had <strong><em>developed severe kidney stones</em></strong><em>,</em> and the doctors told us the condition was life-threatening. They warned my mother that, given his fragile state, another collapse could be fatal. That day, standing in the hospital, I felt a deep shift in my understanding of my brother’s suffering. My mother pulled me and my sister close, leading us to<strong> Daniel’s </strong>bedside, and told us something that has stayed with me ever since. She wanted us to understand that while we were all affected by <strong>Daniel’s </strong>condition, he was the one enduring the true hardship. In that moment, it became clear just how much pain and suffering he had gone through his whole life. He was the one living in a world where he couldn’t talk, couldn’t move, and couldn’t express himself, despite our best efforts to be there for him.

<div>Now, we’re in the middle of what feels like the most difficult chapter yet. When <strong>Daniel</strong> was first admitted to the hospital this time, we were told he was experiencing <strong><em>severe complications, including a urinary infection, a collapsed lung, and dangerously low blood pressure.</em></strong> Every update from the doctors seems to bring more difficult news, and we’ve been told that his condition has reached a point where there’s nothing more they can do to improve it. As painful as it is, we’ve had to begin preparing ourselves for the worst. Through it all, my mother has fought for him tirelessly, refusing to give up no matter how difficult things became. She has been his voice, his caregiver, his advocate, and his protector.

<div>An as his brother, I feel a huge responsibility to support both him and my family. At 21, it feels like I’m carrying a weight I’m not sure I’m strong enough to bear. My father isn’t in our lives, and I struggle with feelings of anger and resentment toward him for leaving us to face all of this on our own. I have a younger sister as well, and I know she’s looking to me to stay strong. I’m doing my best, but there are moments when I feel like I’m drowning.

<div>Reaching out for help isn’t easy for me, but I know we can’t do this alone. We want to <strong>give Daniel the best care</strong> possible in whatever time he has left and to support my family as we face this difficult journey together. I just want <strong>Daniel </strong>to be surrounded by love and comfort, and for my family to find some kind of peace after all we’ve been through.
