My wife and I are raising money to help Lucio Gutierrez became a US citizen by becoming his legal guardians.
Lucio, who is 20 years old and from Juxtalhuaca, Mexico has sadly witnessed devastation in his young life. A terrorist organization called Triqui Movement of Unification and Struggle (MULT) murdered his uncle, his great uncle, and his cousin, tried to kill his grandfather and threatened to rape his sisters. Lucio's family was forced to flee from his small town in an attempt to escape further violence from the gang, but they followed his family to their new residence and continued to harass and terrify them.
Lucio escaped the violence by coming to Atlanta, Georgia, at the age of 15, where he lived in a homeless shelter for approximately one and one half years. He eventually made it to Equinox, a homeless shelter in Albany, New York. This is where I met him. At the time, this determined young man was both working 40 hours a week bussing tables at a local restaurant so that he could send money back to his family in Mexico and attending high school. In 2013, I started to provide academic support services to him through the New York State Migrant Program.
Lucio is one of the most passionate and motivated people I've ever had the pleasure of working with. He is determined to complete his GED and attend Hudson Valley Community College to study business. He dreams of opening his own clothing store in the Albany area.
Despite the obstacles that he has seen in his young life, Lucio still sees the glass as "half full," and has touched his teachers, guidance counselors, and mentors. We have the opportunity to help give this young man a better chance at a fulfilling, happy, and healthy life.
We are raising money to pay for the legal fees needed to become Lucio's legal guardians. Our guardianship will enable him to move forward on the path to citizenship, as well as provide some desperately needed assistance when he needs financial help or emotional support. Once we become Lucio's legal guardians, he will automatically be added to our health insurance policy. Lucio has not had any health insurance since he left Mexico more than five years ago. In addition, Lucio will have our guidance and support as he works on his GED and his college courses.
All contributions are tax deductible and will be administered by Centro Civico, the largest Hispanic advocacy organization in the Capitol District of New York.(http://centrocivico.org/en/ )
