Huancavelica is considered the poorest state in Peru. The people live in conditions in which medical illnesses are abundant, yet their access to basic healthcare is limited.
Since its founding on Sept. 8, 1973, the Peruvian American Medical Society (PAMS) has conducted over 100 medical missions. It is unique in its ability to go into remote areas, treat people, improve the healthcare facility, train the healthcare providers of the area, and leave it more medically self-sustaining.
As a whole, PAMS has seen over 700,000 people; of those about 300,000 people had severe health problems and if it were not for PAMS, would either have died or been seriously disable.
The next mission is in the remote area of Huancavelica, Peru. The goals we hope to accomplish are to educate the communities on parasitic infections, increase the amount of patient beds, and improve the healthcare facility in order to provide more specialized care. The organization runs solely on donation and volunteer work. This is where we need your help. In order reach these goals, we need your help raising money to provide the necessary equipment. The donation is tax deductible, it only takes a couple of minutes, and you are helping to change lives.

“When I first started going to Huancavelica, 10 years ago, they had one hospital that had outdated equipment and furnishings. The adult and child beds were from 1950s, decaying, and had old sheets and blankets. We were able to use donations to get new clean beds, new sheets and build a neonatal intensive care unit with 8 ventilators and 14 beds.
Children, whose mothers died, were in big trouble because they were not getting the nutrients or the immune benefits from their mother’s breast milk. There were no stores or refrigerators so babies were starving to death. We were able to help them by purchasing medications and nutrient solutions from donations.
These are some of the problems we try to fix when we go on these missions. We need your help to continue to do our work”

“Last year I met a young boy who had his leg amputated above the knee due to a tumor. One of the most unfortunate parts is that he lived in a very remote area of Peru and it’s difficult for people to get around, especially in order for them to get healthcare, they have to walk for miles on foot. This particular boy had been getting around by using crutches. Given his situation there was no way he would have been able to get a job or pursue any dreams he may have had in that rural area. Through donations, PAMS was able to obtain a prosthetic leg that was made particularly for him. The moment we made sure that his prosthetic leg fit him, he was able to walk without his crutches and feel normal for the first time since his amputation. It put a gleaming smile on his face and restored hope to him and his family. Moments like that are why I go. That is what we do. That is where donations go. They restore hope.”

“I once read that being wealthy is not about how much you have, but about how much you give. That message really hits home for me because helping those in need gives you a sense of wealth that nothing else can mimic. Dr. Kuon has told me of the high prevalence of infections in these rural areas of Peru. He told me a story of a 12 year old girl who nearly lost her legs because a parasitic infection of Leishmania had gone untreated. Through PAMS I hope to spread awareness of the causes, preventions and treatments of these types of infectious diseases. I truly admire the ability of PAMS to go into a community, treat the people, improve the healthcare facility, train healthcare providers, and essentially leave it as a self-sustaining community”
