The Kexels Need Your Help!

Donation protected
Sometimes neighbors are just neighbors, but when the Kexels moved next door from North Carolina, Kathe, her daughter Kela, and Kela’s two little boys, Elliott and Indy, immediately became like family to me.  And now, they need help to cover costs related to Kathe’s prolonged hospitalization.

Kathe was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2011, and was given around 3-5 years to live. She fought to be listed for a lung transplant, and finally received her life-saving lung in January of 2016. Kathe’s daughter Kela is her caregiver, but Kathe has done so well post-transplant, she has embraced being a full-time gramma, and has been a tremendous help to Kela, a self-employed translator and single mom working to support her family and raise her boys.

Over the past couple months, however, complications related to Kathe’s transplant have dealt the Kexel family a heavy blow. Kathe has been hospitalized at Houston Methodist almost continuously since mid-November. After many life-threatening ups and downs throughout her ongoing admission, Kathe required emergency surgery on December 28th and is currently in critical condition and on a ventilator in the ICU.

Being new to the area, the Kexels haven’t had the chance to build much of a local support network. The 2-hour round-trip between the Kexel household and the hospital has put an incredible strain on their emotional, physical and financial resources. During more critical periods, Kela and the children have been forced to stay at the hotel attached to the hospital, secure expensive agency childcare on short notice, and cover the myriad other associated out-of-pocket expenses. The financial strain would be overwhelming under normal circumstances; however, Kela’s ability to work and generate an income has been greatly diminished throughout this ordeal, as she visits her mom every single day, both to provide emotional support and to ensure her mother is receiving the best possible care, while continuing to provide a stable, nurturing environment for 4-year-old Elliott and 2-year old Indy.

The Kexel family needs your help so that they can continue to do everything in their power to see Kathe through this difficult and unpredictable road to recovery, without jeopardizing their ability to cover basic and essential needs. They also have a fund through www.helphopelive.com, which is verified in terms of medical need, and was opened when Kathe was initially listed for lung transplant. That account is valid throughout her lifetime and donations to it are tax-deductible. I chose to set up this GoFundMe account for them because I was made aware that people wishing to help were having difficulty using that site and I wanted to be sure that those wanting to donate would be able to do so with this more user-friendly format.

This wonderful family's  need is immediate and urgent.  Thank you for any help you can offer, including just sharing this link.
