Kevin went in for a stress test related to his heart failure and was admitted that day to the hospital Friday June 23 with Kidney Failure.
Doctors worked for 2 days to try to get his numbers down. Unfortunately his creatinine numbers were still climbing, 6+ range. He was on the verge of Dialysis. Kevin was then sent to the ICU for closer observation. 5 days spent in the ICU did the trick. Kidney numbers have come back to a more normal range. 8 days total in the hospital.
Kevin's blood pressures are very low at this time due to his heart failure. His pumping function has become so low that it's begining to do damage to other organs. Kevin was sent home on a IV drip medicine to help keep his heart strong enough for surgery.
Kevin has done pretty much all the testing needed for transplant. Doctors don't think his heart is strong enough to make it to transplant. 1-3 years is a typical wait and sometimes longer. So Kevin is having a LVAD put in. This device is sewn into the heart to bypass the weak ventrical. The pump will now be doing the work for this side of his heart. The pump is set inside the body and a driveline will come out his stomach. This driveline will be hooked up to a computer module worn out side the body to control the pumps speed The pump will be powered by external batteries.
Surgery is scheduled for July 31st. The one good thing that's happening from all this is, Kevin will finally get on the list for transplant after all these years of fighting.
Kevin is no longer working and recovery time is 3 to 6 months. Kevin has chosen to come home to spend time with his wife and kids before his long hospital stay. Prayers are greatly appreciated and whatever you can do to help this wonderful family!
