Kevin's Recovery and Rehabilitation

Donation protected
Thirty-three year-old Kevin Sobalvarro remains hospitalized at Kendall Trauma Center, Miami, after suffering extensive injuries when his motorcycle and a car collided Friday night, December 14. He has undergone multiple surgeries for five fractures of his pelvis, numerous fractures in his right hand and wrist and has required several transfusions due to internal bleeding.

The driver of the car has acknowledged responsibility for the accident, which occurred when the vehicle suddenly swerved into Kevin’s path as the two were headed in the same direction. The impact catapulted Kevin some 15 feet before he landed on his butt. Miraculously, there are no injuries to Kevin’s back, spinal cord or head.

The road ahead is uncertain, with prolonged recovery and rehabilitation. Hospitalization is expected to be at least 4-6 weeks, followed by an indeterminate period at a rehabilitation facility and, later, ongoing physical therapy. Kevin will not be able to stand for at least three months.

Kevin’s nature is to consider how to help others, as indicated in his question to one of the first responders on the scene of the accident: “Is anyone else hurt?” The police officer said that in all his years responding to accidents, he has never heard a victim ask about the welfare of others involved.

Now Kevin finds himself totally dependent on others for his welfare.  The financial impact on him and his family is unimaginable. He has motorcycle insurance,  but no health insurance and he is not eligible for Medicaid. He is a parttime computer analyst without sick leave or other benefits who has supplemented his income as an independent computer consultant. He will be unable to support himself for the foreseeable future.

His current on-site support are his mother, Ana, who flew the day after the mishap from San Francisco; his father, David, and his family, who live in Miami; his stepfather Richard's sister, Kathy Olive, a physical therapist, and a wide circle of friends.

Hopefully, this gofundme campaign will help Kevin and his family substantially defray the financial challenges ahead.  Any amount you can donate would be greatly appreciated. Please share this link with your friends or anyone you think would be willing to help.

There will be periodic updates on this as well as a forthcoming Facebook site.
