Kerry's New #CanceredPlans

Donation protected
Hi, friends of Kerry. What’s to follow is something I never wanted to write. Ever. But here goes.

As many of you know, it has been a year since Kerry's initial cancer diagnosis.  It has been a hard year of chemo and surgeries and countless ups and downs. Through it all, Kerry has maintained her good humor, gracious spirit, and deep love of her family and community. She has been an absolute champion, but sadly she has recently received less than great news. While we remain hopeful for a miracle, the reality is that her cancer is permanent and cannot be cured. Her treatment at DHMC continues while she prepares for a 2nd opinion in September.

After a year of treatment, Kerry thought she would be able to return to work when the upcoming school year starts next month. Upon hearing the latest prognosis it became clear that that this would not be the case. As you can imagine, this was a huge emotional blow to Kerry. She misses teaching and she very much misses her students.

Moreover, this all has a significant financial impact. Her disability insurance runs out this month and by the end of August her employer will stop paying for her health insurance. The financial burden of this disease will not get easier with time.

Kerry’s latest prognosis has also shed new light on how much time Kerry has left to mother Max and Dalton. This is not something that any of us wants to think about, or imagine, and we all hope the doctors are wrong. However, if they are right, then we want to support Kerry in her desire to be as present, and unburdened, for her children as possible. We hope whatever time they have left together is spent making memories.

You may know that Kerry, Max, and Dalton are huge Pittsburgh Pirates fans. Over the past few years they have traveled to several baseball stadiums to watch their team play. How great would it be to help them do more of that in the coming year? Or to giving Kerry the flexibility to say YES to life experiences without undue strain. (Suggestions: a contribution through this site; frequent flyer miles or hotel points that you might not be using; gift cards; or anything else that you think might help make memories.)

I know we have asked for your help before. I know that so many of you have given generously of your time, love, prayers, and financial support. Thank you for that—everything you have done has already made a huge difference! From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. If you are in a position to help again, please do. If you feel inspired to be part of helping this family make memories, please do. If you just can't right now, that's okay too. Keep sending those positive thoughts and prayers. Every little bit helps.

Thank you.
