A Message From Kerrigan:
My name is Kerrigan Carter and I am 14 years old. This past year I have been undergoing testing and surgery to correct some of the hearing loss that I have been experiencing. I have bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. I had my first cochlear implant on August 2, 2017. A second implant for my other ear is scheduled for May 30, 2018. I no longer have acoustic hearing and when my devices are off (sleeping, raining, etc.) and I must read lips to communicate with others. I can not hear important things when my devices are off. I can not hear fire alarms, water running, smoke detectors, alarm clocks, or doorbells. I can hear some noises and sounds, but can only hear 9 of the 26 letters of the alphabet. This year has been a year of transition where I am learning how to adjust to my new reality. I have maintained my work ethic and strive to do the best I can in school. I have been a two year member of the Jr. National Honor Society, have played soccer, been a member of 4H, Girl Scouts, the band and choir. My love of music has been derailed as I can no longer hear music acoustically. I had to make the devastating decision to leave choir. I will remain in the band as well as continue to participate in the discus and shot put for my track team at South Vienna Middle School.
I am in need of a hearing assistance dog to accompany me throughout my days from here on out. A hearing assistance dog will provide security and safety to me not only while at school but also at home. A hearing assistance dog will alert me for knocking, doorbells, phone ringing, water running, washer/dryer timers, oven timers, baby cries, tornado sirens, fire alarms, smoke detectors, emergency vehicles and most importantly, it will alert me when someone is calling out to me or approaching me. Here is where you come into the equation. In order to receive a hearing assistance dog, we have started the application process, but are in need of the funding.
