Kerala Relief Fund: Coconut Farmers

As you may have heard in the news, devastating rainfall, floods and mudslides hit the Kerala region of India last month. Over 400 people were killed and 800,000 were displaced. Relief camps have a shortage of clean drinking water and limited access to food and medicine. This was the worst flood the country has seen in 100 years.
We at Alter Eco, source the Fair Trade & Organic coconut oil used in our Dark Chocolate Truffles from small-scale farmers in this region, through the Fair Trade Alliance Kerala cooperative. There was substantial loss to property and crops for the farmers of FTAK, but we're happy and relieved to report that no one lost their lives in these communities.
These farmers are part of our Alter Eco family and we love them dearly. That's why we're calling on our friends, families, and chocolate-loving consumers, to help us raise money to support them in rebuilding their homes, their farms and their livelihoods.
Our goal is to raise $10,000 through GoFundMe, and to maximize our impact,Alter Eco and NextWorld Evergreen will match all contributions! That's a goal of $20,000.
With $20,000 we can:
- repair 18 damaged homes and six wells
- replant crops for 90% of farmers affected
The total damage in these communities is estimated at $275,000, so this is a small contribution...but a good start! These farmers live off of their land and their organic regenerative agriculture, so the sooner they can begin farming and selling crops, the sooner they can get back on their feet.
